Washington state residents routinely travel on foot or on a bike. In fact, nearly 30% of the state’s population does not drive, meaning that cycling is more than just a form of recreation. An estimated 18.6% of traffic fatalities from 2013 to 2017 involved pedestrians or cyclists, and the number of serious injuries and fatalities related to cycling accidents has increased dramatically. In Washington, roughly 70% of deadly bicycle accidents involved speeds greater than 30 miles per hour.
