Prominent Distracted Driving Statistics

What Is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is when a motorist is engaged in any activity that takes his or her attention away from carefully driving the vehicle. The most common activities cited in distracted driving cases were eating, talking to passengers, drinking, switching stations on the stereo, talking on the phone or texting.

The Dangers of Distracted Driving

Texting is a particularly dangerous activity because it requires that the driver take his or her eyes off the road for five seconds or more. This doesn’t seem like a long time, but five seconds is enough time to travel the length of a football field.

Distracted driving is the reason that 3,166 people lost their lives in 2017. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration determined that a distracted driver is responsible for nine deaths every day in the United States. In addition, 1,000 people are injured in crashes caused by a distracted driver each day.

Other Common Distractions

Many more things distract people as they drive on highways and roads, and they are totally unnecessary. For example, 31 percent of drivers stated that they were distracted by their dogs. These people also admitted that they do not restrain their pets when they are riding inside a vehicle. This makes the situation more dangerous.

Teen drivers are distracted because they are texting, and it’s the reason that 58 percent of the distracted driving collisions occur amongst this age group. All that is required to crash into another vehicle is for the driver to reach for an object. It is the reason that distracted drivers are eight times more likely to run into another vehicle or object while they are driving.
